Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a toddler. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
